What a treadmill taught me about energy in business.
Winter has arrived, and I’ll be honest… the couch is calling. A warm blanket, my knitting and a Netflix scroll session sounded like the dream. But I knew that kind of recharge—while tempting—wouldn’t serve my energy long term.
So I laced up and headed to the gym. I jumped on the treadmill, full of good intentions and "let’s go!" energy. I cranked the speed up, threw in a hill climb for good measure (because apparently, I thought I was training to Climb Mt Taranaki), and off I went.
…for about two minutes.
My breath ran out before the motivation did. My legs said, "No thanks," and my energy tanked fast. So, I dialled it back. Slowed the speed, flattened the hill, and let my body find its rhythm again.
As I settled into a more sustainable pace, I had one of those sneaky little aha moments.
This is exactly what so many business people do—especially the high-achieving, get-it-done types like us.
We sprint uphill from the get-go, eyes on the prize, pushing hard because slowing down feels like failure.
But here’s the truth I had to relearn (again): sustainable progress isn’t about going fast—it’s about going wise.
The real win? Learning to work with your energy, not against it.
Knowing when to push, when to pause, and when to glide.
Giving yourself permission to move at a pace that fuels, not drains.
Because scaling your business shouldn't mean burning out on the treadmill of hustle.
So here’s your gentle nudge from me to you:
💬 Where in your business (or life) are you sprinting up a hill when you really need to ease into your stride?
You don’t need to prove anything by pushing harder. You need a rhythm that lasts.
Let’s stop running on empty. Let’s build momentum that feels good.
If that resonates, hit reply—I’d love to hear what pace you’re finding for yourself this season.
Energetically yours
